This volume is comprised of the letters to his family at home of a boy who is travelling with his father, to recover the father's health. The letters contain brief historical and topographical descriptions of the places the boy has visited. The tour is so rapid, that some of his account reads like a list. This is not, though, a geography text-book to teach children about their country, but rather the descriptions are supposed to be enjoyed, probably as a vicarious visit. In this sense, this volume is a slightly more refined and longer reworking of the 'Curiosities of England' books pioneered by John Newbery in the mid-1700s.
