The Tool-Bar

The navigational tool-bar contains three drop-down boxes as well as a link to this help page.

The first drop-down box contains links which will take you to:

The second box is for searching the Hockliffe Collection. Enter the text you wish to find in the first drop-down box, just to the right of the 'Find' button. Then click on the 'Find' button.

The Catalogue

You can access the catalogue by selecting it in the first drop-down box in the tool-bar.

The catalogue can be arranged by author, title, place of publication, and genre (all alphabetically), and by date of publication or the catalogue number assigned to each book (in ascending order). Simply select which catalogue arrangement you would like in the drop-down box in the top left-hand corner of the catalogue page. The Collection has been dividied into sixteen genres of books. These are:

  1. Aesop and other fables
  2. Nursery stories and fairy tales
  3. Stories published before 1850
  4. Stories published after 1850
  5. Periodicals and annuals
  6. Bibles, hymns and other purely religious works
  7. Books of instruction
  8. Nursery rhymes and alphabets
  9. Moveable toy books
  10. Myths and heroes
  11. Poetry, verse and rhymes
  12. Games and pastimes
  13. Natural science
  14. Geography and travel
  15. History and biography
  16. Mathematics

From the catalogue it is possible to access individual texts by clicking on the catalogue number in the first column. You will then be taken to the bibliographic record for an individual book.

Individual Book Records

Each book in the Collection which has been added to the electronic catalogue has a single page devoted to it. This usually contains a bibliographic record of the book, a thumb-nail image of the title-page, and a short essay about the book.

Click on the thumb-nail image to read the book. You will be taken to larger images of the pages of the book. Links to the next (and previous) pages at both the top and bottom of the frame will allow you to turn the pages to read the book. Alternatively, you can use the links in the left-hand frame to go straight to a given page opening. Following the 'Book' link from this frame will take you back to the individual book record - the page with bibliographical data and an essay - for the book you are looking at. The 'Catalogue' link will return you to the main catalogue.

Most books in the Collection will have an essay to accompany them. Several similar books, perhaps from a series, or by the same author, may be accompanied by a single essay. These essays may contain references to particular pages of the book under discussion, and to works of reference which shed light on the book. In either case there will be a link which will open a new page in your browser. This will show either the relevant page of the book under discussion, or a bibliographic record of the source cited. Simply close this new window to return to the essay. Sometimes the essays will contain references - and links - to other books in the Hockliffe Collection. Following these links will replace the essay and Individual Book Record you are viewing with the Individual Book Record page of the new book. To return to the page you were viewing before you followed the link, use the 'Back' button on your brower.
