Help: The Go to... panel
The Go to... panel lets you go directly to a page or image by typing in a page number, or tale/group name and line number. You will see this screen either because you have tried to run a search which the Go to... did not recognize, or you have pressed the icon in the Go to... panel
Using the Go to... panel to find a page
If you want to go straight to an image of the first page of the manuscript, folio 2r ('r' is for recto, or right) you could do it as follows:
The reader will then place the image of this page in the lower window, as below.
The reader will recognize page numbers in the form '2r', '2R', '100v', '100V', etc. Do NOT put a space between the number and the 'r' or 'v'. Hengwrt runs from folio 2r to 249v: thus the reader will recognize any number in that range.
Using the Go to... panel to find a tale and line
Usually, you do NOT know the page you want to go to. You want to look at the text of a particular line in a particular section.
You can use the Go to... facility to go just to the section of text you want. Suppose you want to go to line 1918 of the Knights Tale. You can go there in any one of three ways:
Try typing each of these in turn into the text field in the Go to... panel. In each case, you should be taken to folio 37r of the manuscript, containing the text of the Knight's Tale lines 1913-1952.
The syntax of the Go to... is as follows:
Thus: 'GP 1', or 'A 1', or 'I 1' (not 'GP1', 'A1', 'I1'). See the 'Table of correspondences' below for a summary of how each of the three systems labels each section of the Tales.
Alternatively, if you just want to go to the beginning of a particular tale, just type in the name by which the Tale is usually known: Miller to see the Miller's Tale, Wife for the Wife of Bath's Prologue, Pardoner for the Pardoner's Tale, etc.
Table of correspondences: how each section is labelled by the three systems
In this table, we give first the usual name given to the Tale or Link, the folios it occupies in Hengwrt, and then its name and line-range in each of the three lineation systems supported.
