Following the great success of what Ronald did last week: I have been thinking of some tough cases for alignment of multiple witnesses
Here are three cases..
1. Case one: among multiple witnesses, some have a lengthy ‘addition’; other mss have a variant within this addition
For example, these three:
a The black cat
b The black and white cat
c The black and green cat
If you are using a as the base: you want to establish that:
both b and c add words between black/cat
b and c agree in the ‘and’; vary on ‘white/green’
2. Case two: among multiple witnesses, there various lengthy ‘additions’; with different mss have differing variant within additions
a The black cat
b The black and white cat
c The black and green cat
d The black very special cat
e The black not very special cat
Now, we are getting complicated. The four have additions, with b/c close to one another, d/e close to one another.
Of course, all these are cases of ‘edit distance’. b/c are near each other in edit distance, and further from a; similarly d/e are near each other, and further from a.
3. Case three: the actual example given elsewhere on the blog:
a He was agast so
b He was agast
c So he was agast
d He was so agast
e He was agast and feerd
f So was he agast
Again, we want to use ‘edit distance’ within an alignment structure to identify and record that:
a and b differ in one word added/lost only
a and d differ in a one word transposition
a and c differ in a three word transpositin
c and d differ in a two word transposition
c and f differ in a one word transposition
and so on…
Interesting, yes?
